"I think that's the real loss of innocence: the first time you glimpse the boundaries that will limit your own potential."
.
"When I think of what she transformed into much later, what demented tragedy she had become by the end of her young life, I can envisage in my mother the agonising delight of the reader who hears for the first time all the ramblings of the soul, and recognises them as her own."
.
"Steep cliffs crowned with clusters of green trees lined the coast. Australia! The younger passengers let out cries of joy. The older passengers knew that the key to happiness lay in keeping your expectations low. They booed."
.
"Denouncing civilisation takes its toll when you continue to exist within it."
.
"But when she was alone with me, she was different. I realised that her sweetness, the way she carried on with the people of th town, was her mask. It was a good one, the best kind of mask there is; a true lie. Her mask was a weave of tattered shreds torn from the beautiful parts of herself."
.
"I was in awe of how, after all the pain and heartache and drama and anxiety people cause, they so unceremoniously leave your life."
.
"In short, I'm a sweetheart but I'm cold about it."
